SMA Muhammadiyah Launches School Greening Movement with Tree-Planting Day

In an effort to promote environmental awareness and sustainability, SMA Muhammadiyah [City] officially launched its Green School Movement on Friday through a Tree-Planting Day event involving the entire school community.

Over 200 students, guided by teachers and volunteers, planted fruit-bearing and shade trees around the school yard and nearby public spaces. The initiative is part of a long-term school program to improve environmental consciousness, beautify the campus, and create a more sustainable learning environment.

“This isn’t just about planting trees—it’s about planting values,” said Mrs. Nurlina Yusuf, the school’s Environmental Science teacher and coordinator of the program. “We want our students to develop a deep sense of responsibility for the Earth and to become agents of positive change for the environment.”

The event began with a short environmental education session, followed by a tree-planting ceremony symbolizing the school’s commitment to a greener future. Each class was given a plot to maintain and care for their trees as part of an ongoing competition that encourages teamwork and environmental stewardship.

Students expressed enthusiasm about contributing directly to the environment and are excited to see their trees grow over the years. The school also plans to launch a composting project and eco-club activities as follow-ups to the movement.

The Green School Movement is aligned with Muhammadiyah’s values of caring for the Earth as a form of worship and stewardship (khalifah) on this planet. With this campaign, SMA Muhammadiyah hopes to inspire other schools and communities to do the same.
